Olight H2R torch/headtorch, important update to review

I had a quick night out camping last night.

Waking at 1:30am I thought I'd see what the torch was like in proper darkness. I switched in on and selected the Turbo mode (2300 lumens). It pierced the darkness.

I put the torch down in the tent, lamp pointing down so as not to dazzle myself, and got up on my knees to better assess the distance it lit. It was amazing.

Taking the tent down this morning I noticed a hole burnt in my groundsheet. It took a few minutes for me to realise what had happened. In the less than two seconds the torch was on my groundsheet it had burnt a round hole clean through it. When I unpacked the torch at home I found residue of the groundsheet fabric on the lens. Trying it again I realised how hot the lens gets in Turbo mode.

It's important to state there is no warning of this anywhere in the torch instructions.

I am not pleased.

I WILL be informing Olight.

It is important that anyone reading this reads the further update here.

  1. So, actually, you could burn your fingers taking it off too.
I'll stick with my 360 lumens one.
But I'll test how hot it becomes when next out. 🤔

    2. I'd still use it.
      Now you know..
TBH, they don't last long on full power.
I'm going to see how hot mine gets. I'll let you know.

  3. That was your mistake not olight's, all small high power torches get hot and common sense says don't put it face down in a tent, and if you're trying to blame olight that shows you don't know products and have no common sense

    1. I wouldn't expect something that is designed to be worn on your head to get hot enough to melt a ground sheet, what's it gonna do to long hair that falls over it, common sense would tell me not to sell something that does that as an headtorch 🤔

    2. Dale, surely you're not suggesting I have some common sense?
Have you met me? Oh...wait a minute. That question should have gone to "anonymous"

    3. You haven't got long hair Geoff. Dale must be referring to me... 🤣

    4. Why is it that the ones that make deconstructive comments are all called ANONYMOUS.
Maybe they all come from the same family and gene pool.
Even if you post anonymously, you can have the common courtesy to sign your name. 🤔
I know that the high power led torches get hot, but not sure it should melt silNylon. And if it does, surely it could burn a pack or clothing. It certainly ought to be stated on the packaging and advertising.
Same issue with Superfeet inners in Gortex lined boots. They can trash them. They admit it, but don't put it on the box, or on their site.
I expect I have insufficient common sense to know that though 🤔😂

So, ought they use a better heat sink or heat dissipation shield?

    6. That is why the have a lock function so they don't accidenkty turn on I'm pockets or bags , maybe all these companies should put warnings on their items

  4. Tend to disagree with Anonymous. Having used a variety of torches for over thirty years, that is the first time i have ever heard of that happening. To indicate that Geoff has no common sense is slanderous and I would take issue with you on that.

    2. Torches 30 yrs ago with one lumen lol , if you have been using any modern high powered torch they get hot , they double as hand warmers in the winter , as for olight that is why they have a turbo mode that only lasts a couple of minutes because they get hot on high power , am I the only person that uses Google and you tube before buying items ?

  8. It's pathetic isn't it Dawn?

    Dear Anonymous,
    a few important points
    1. Read my profile and see if you still think I have "no common sense".
    2. I didn't buy it. If you'd read the posts properly you'd see I was given it to review.
    3. There is simply no way any useful review could not include my tent being burnt.
    4. I don't know where you got asking for a new tent from. You must be trolling me on Twitter where I mentioned asking for compensation. How sad. Since Olight's product has caused damage to my property through no fault of mine, I see requesting compensation as entirely appropriate.
    5. You're entitled to your opinion but, sadly, you are confusing this with facts. My blog contains facts. There is no need though for your rudeness.
    6. Commenting anonymously is, in my opinion, cowardly.

Finally, thank you for convincing me to return to moderating comments. I had removed moderation just a couple of days ago...and then you come along.

You've done me a great service.
    So, run along now...

  9. How cowardly and nasty can anyone be? Anonymous would take a lot of beating.

Sad that you have had to revert to moderating, Geoff. But, it keeps nasty people like anonymous from venting their bile.

    1. Indeed Gordon. And, as you can see, I can approve comments quite quickly, assuming they're appropriate

  10. It seems our "friend" has missed the point of sending out a new product for review. To check it out and see how it behaves. As an outdoors person of 30+ years experience (admittedly with very little common sense - I have a head-torch story to prove that!) I've never had a torch designed for that purpose that got hot enough to melt stuff. I'll be interested to see how the manufacturer responds
